How Spain won it
Lucia Sainz and Lorena Alonso opened the tie with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Egle Petrauskaite and Ana Marija Zubori in the +40 category. Belen Castrillo and Maricruz Baquero followed with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Rhona Patricia Kaczmarczyk and Andrea Neugarten in the +60 bracket. Eva Gayoso and Maria Wakonigg sealed the tie in the +55 category, beating Lisa Maria Teer and Veronica Liz Costabel 6-1, 6-3.
Why it matters
The result extends Spain's run at the top of the FIP Senior World Cup and caps a perfect run through the knockout rounds, where they had already eliminated Argentina in the semifinals. The USA reached their first final in the event's history, a sign the gap at the top is narrowing even in defeat.
