Icardo and Jensen's Bordeaux shock tightens the women's top-four race

Tamara Icardo and Claudia Jensen have blown the women's top-four race wide open. The pair won the Bordeaux P2 on July 5, their first title together, and the result has reshaped the standings heading into next week's Malaga P1.

The run that did it

Icardo and Jensen went in as the No. 5 seeds. They knocked out the Valladolid champions Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, then stunned world No. 1s Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the final. It was the first time Icardo and Jensen had ever beaten Brea and Triay, who had won all four of their previous meetings.

What it means for the rankings

The title is worth 600 points. Padel Magazine's post-Bordeaux ranking, published July 7, has the pair closing to within about 500 points of the fourth-ranked team in the Race. Brea and Triay keep the No. 1 spot, but the gap behind them is shrinking fast. On the men's side, Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello stretched their own lead past 7,000 points with a fourth straight title, beating Galan and Chingotto 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-2.

Next up

Malaga P1 runs July 13-19. Icardo and Jensen arrive as the form pair, and a strong week there would put a top-four seeding within reach.
