Claudia Fernandez is leaving Sofia Araujo to play with Martina Calvo, and the shake-up drags two more of the tour's brightest young players with it. Calvo splits from Marta Ortega, and Ortega then links up with Araujo. It's a straight four-way crossover among pairs that sat near the top of the women's game.
When the new pairs start
None of it changes anything this week. All four finish the Malaga P1 (July 13-19) with their current partners first. The FIP's own draw notes confirm Fernandez and Araujo are lining up together one last time in Malaga. The new combinations debut at the Pretoria P1 in South Africa, from July 27 to August 2, when Premier Padel makes its first stop in the country.
Why now
Both pairs had started the season below expectations, and reporting from Spanish padel media points to results, not friction, as the driver. Fernandez and Calvo are two of the youngest, most highly rated players on the circuit, and they're expected to slot in around the world's top four or five pairs once the change takes effect. Araujo and Ortega will sit just behind them.
It's the kind of mid-season reset the women's draw hasn't seen at this level in a while, and it reshapes the chase behind the settled top two of Gemma Triay / Delfina Brea and Bea Gonzalez / Paula Josemaria.
