Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger are out of the Pretoria P1. Javi Leal and Fran Guerrero saved seven match points and beat them 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 on Friday, closing it out 13-11 in the third-set tie-break to reach the first Premier Padel semifinal ever played on South African soil.
It is a real scalp. Lebron and Augsburger were runners-up at the Malaga P1 only last week, where they pushed Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia in the final. In Pretoria's thin, ball-flying altitude they held two match points on serve and could not convert. Leal and Guerrero kept swinging and stole it.
How the men's quarterfinals went
The top pairs did their jobs. Coello and Tapia beat Jose Jimenez and Alex Arroyo 7-6, 6-2. Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan dropped a set but got past Juan Tello and Maxi Arce 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Juanlu Esbri and Sanyo Gutierrez were the most ruthless of the day, dismissing Alex Ruiz and Javi Garcia 6-0, 6-3.
That sets up Saturday's semifinals: Coello and Tapia face the giant-killers Leal and Guerrero, while Chingotto and Galan meet Esbri and Gutierrez. The winners meet in Sunday's final.
Women's semifinals are locked in too
Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea edged Sofia Icardo and Jessica Jensen 7-6, 6-4. Alejandra Salazar and Bea Osoro came through 7-6, 6-2 against Araujo and Ortega. On the other side, Bea Gonzalez and Paula Josemaria crushed Guinart and Alonso 6-1, 6-1, and Fernandez and Calvo beat Barrera and Montes 6-1, 6-4.
The women's semifinals pit Triay and Brea against Salazar and Osoro, and Gonzalez and Josemaria against Fernandez and Calvo. Both finals are scheduled for Sunday, 2 August.
