Padel Set to Make Its Medal Debut at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto
Padel is about to step onto one of multi-sport competition's biggest stages for the first time. The sport makes its debut as a full medal event at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, running August 22 to 28.
A new stage for the sport
The competition takes place at the Salinella Mediterranean Park, a newly built permanent padel facility in Taranto, according to the International Padel Federation (FIP) and the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG). Both bodies confirmed the dates and venue ahead of the event, which sits inside the wider XX Mediterranean Games running from August 21 through September 3.
Padel shares the Salinella site with skateboarding, another sign of how fast the sport has spread beyond its traditional Spanish and Italian base. FIP says padel has already featured at the Asian Games, the European Games, the South American Games and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in recent years, and Taranto is the next step in that push for wider recognition.
Who is competing
Federations from around 18 Mediterranean nations, including Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Croatia, Greece, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, entered athletes for the men's, women's and mixed doubles events, organizers said, with roughly 136 players registered across the three categories. FIP's own preview named Spain's David Gala and former world No. 1 Lucia Sainz among the notable entries, alongside Italy's Carolina Orsi and Portugal's Sofia and Pedro Araujo.
What it means
A strong week in Taranto gives padel more evidence to make its case for eventual inclusion in even bigger multi-sport events down the line. For now, the Mediterranean Games berth is one of the clearest signs yet that the sport's international federation is winning the argument for recognition beyond the Premier Padel tour.
