Stupaczuk and Sanz Win Premier Padel Debut in Madrid

Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz needed just two sets to win their first match together on the Premier Padel tour, beating Curro Cabeza and Mariano Gonzalez San Martin 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 at the Comunidad de Madrid P1 on Wednesday.

A new team built in August

Stupaczuk and Sanz came together last month, each arriving from a different partnership. It was a fresh pairing for both, and Madrid marked their first appearance as a duo on the Premier Padel tour itself, even though they had already played together elsewhere.

Belgrade gold set the tone

Before Madrid, the new pair headed to the Cupra FIP Tour and delivered immediately. Stupaczuk and Sanz won the FIP Gold Belgrade title on August 31, beating Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas 6-3, 7-5 in the final. It was their first tournament together as a pair. 'Para ser nuestro primer torneo juntos, las sensaciones han sido muy buenas,' Stupaczuk said afterward, roughly translating to: for a first tournament together, it felt really good. The result kept them at number 4 in the rankings heading into the Paris Major, which starts September 7 at Roland Garros.

What's next

Seeded fourth in Madrid, Stupaczuk and Sanz move into the quarterfinals, which start Friday at the Movistar Arena. Cabeza and Gonzalez San Martin, who had won their opening match to reach the round of 16, are out of the tournament.
