Coello and Tapia Are Out in Madrid: First Quarterfinal Loss Since May 2025

Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia are out of the Comunidad de Madrid P1. Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas beat the world number ones 7-5, 7-6(5) in Saturday's quarterfinal, in a match that lasted just over an hour.

A first early exit since May 2025

It's the first time Coello and Tapia have lost before the semifinals since May 2025, when they fell to Diestro and Esbri at the Asuncion P1. In the year and a half since, they had piled up titles and never gone out of a tournament this early again.

A tiebreak held its nerve

Nieto and Yanguas had to survive their own scare to get the win. They led 5-4 in the second set before Coello and Tapia leveled it, but the pair regrouped and closed out the tiebreak 7-5. For Nieto, a Madrid native, the win keeps alive a run at a home title. He and Yanguas arrive in form after a runner-up finish at FIP Gold Belgrade last week.

What it means for the draw

The upset reshuffles the men's draw completely. With the top seeds gone, Nieto and Yanguas move on to face Gonza Alfonso and Tino Libaak in the semifinal, while Alejandro Galan and Federico Chingotto play Inigo Jofre and Jairo Bautista on the other side.

For Coello and Tapia, the early exit ends any hope of a Madrid trophy this year, but it does not change their grip on the world number one ranking, which they have held for well over a season.
