Germany Sets Up France Decider for Group B Title at FIP Senior World Cup

Germany's women beat Paraguay 3-2 in a tight tie on day two of the FIP Senior World Cup in Buenos Aires, setting up a Group B decider against France that will decide who advances to the quarterfinals.

A tie that went the distance

The tie between Germany and Paraguay came down to the final match. Tiedjen and Kruse got past Madelaire and Calderini to seal the 3-2 win for Germany. That result sets up a winner-take-group clash against France on Wednesday, September 16, the last day of group play in the women's draw.

Only the group winner moves on

Wednesday closes the group stage across all five age divisions, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+. Group winners take the eight spots in the women's quarterfinal draw. Everyone else, including whichever of Germany or France finishes second in Group B, drops into a separate bracket that plays out the final standings from 9th through 26th.

Mexico, Portugal and the host nation also win

Elsewhere on day two, Mexico beat Switzerland 4-1 and Portugal beat Japan 4-1. Host nation Argentina swept Canada 5-0 to back up its opening-day win, and Brazil, Great Britain, Australia, Chile and the United States all posted 5-0 wins of their own. Defending champion Spain had a rest day and next faces Chile, with first place in Group A on the line.

The FIP Senior World Cup is being held in South America for the first time, split between Parque Roca and Lasaigues Padel Canning, and runs through September 19.
