Galan and Chingotto Edge Alonso and Goni to Reach Paris Major Semifinal

Ale Galan and Fede Chingotto are through to the semifinals of the Paris Major after beating Edu Alonso and Aimar Goni 7-6(5), 6-2 in Saturday's quarterfinal at Roland Garros.

A tight opener

Alonso and Goni arrived in good form. The pair had already knocked out Madrid P1 finalists Nieto and Yanguas in the round of 16, and they carried that momentum into a first set that went the distance. Galan and Chingotto needed a tiebreak to close it out 7-6(5) after both teams held serve through most of the set.

Galan and Chingotto pull clear

Once the tiebreak went their way, the third seeds settled into their rhythm. They broke twice in the second set and closed out the match 6-2, wrapping up the win in a little over an hour and a half on court.

What it means

The result sends Galan and Chingotto into a semifinal against Martin Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro, who eliminated Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz earlier in the draw. It is a familiar path for Galan and Chingotto, who beat Nieto and Yanguas in the Madrid P1 final last month for their seventh title together.

For Alonso and Goni, the quarterfinal run is their best result of the season. Backing up the round of 16 upset with a competitive set against one of the tour's most consistent pairs is a real step forward for the Spanish duo.

The semifinal against Di Nenno and Navarro is scheduled for Saturday at Roland Garros, on the same day as the other men's semifinal between Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello against Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger.
