Collombon and Sharifova Stun Top Seed Salazar to Reach Lyon Semifinal

Alix Collombon and Ksenia Sharifova pulled off the biggest upset of FIP Platinum Lyon 2026 on Friday, beating top seeds Alejandra Salazar and Aranzazu Osoro 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 in the women's quarterfinals. The result sends the home favorite through to Saturday's semifinal against Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga.

A tight three-setter in front of the home crowd

Collombon and Sharifova dropped the first set but steadied to close out the second 7-5, then survived a third-set tiebreak to seal the win. Collombon plays out of Lyon, and the crowd at the Piste Centrale Ville de Lyon was firmly behind the pair through the decider.

The ranking gap made the result even more striking. Salazar sits at No. 14 in the world and Osoro at No. 17, while Sharifova is ranked 34th and Collombon 36th. Salazar had learned only hours earlier that she was left off Spain's squad for the FIP World Cup in Doha, adding an extra sting to the defeat for the two-time world champion.

Next up: a semifinal against Caldera and Goenaga

Collombon and Sharifova, seeded seventh, now face third seeds Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga for a spot in Sunday's final. The other women's semifinal pits Lucia Sainz and Leticia Manquillo against Martina Fassio and Agueda Perez. Both last-four ties are scheduled for Saturday at the Piste Centrale Ville de Lyon.

Collombon and Sharifova will start as underdogs again, but so did they against Salazar and Osoro. A repeat performance would put an unseeded pairing into the final of a FIP Platinum event, a result that would rank among the biggest of either player's season.
